Northbound Directions to Dzogchen Retreat Center

(driving north on Interstate 5 coming from southern Oregon or California)

PLEASE NOTE: Until you turn into the DRC driveway, ALL roads in these directions are paved. If you turn onto a gravel road other than the DRC driveway, you need to backtrack and get back on the paved road. Taking the route on this page will shave about an hour off your drive if you are coming from the south (as opposed to driving through Eugene). Also note it is nearly an hour drive from I-5 to the retreat center using this route since due to the many curves your speed is limited to an average of about 30 MPH. It is not advised to drive these roads after dark, especially for the first time.

The map below has the simple directions. Below the map are the same directions with more details.

DRC Map from South

Written directions with additional details:

Take I-5 for 38 miles northbound from Roseburg, Oregon

Bear RIGHT from I-5 onto Exit 162 (AKA the "Drain" exit) which loops over the interstate and onto Highway 99 South (AKA Umpqua Hwy, AKA Highway 38). Go 0.9 mile to the first RIGHT.

Turn RIGHT on Curtin Road (AKA Country Road 212, AKA Territorial Highway). Go 0.7 mile to the first paved LEFT.

Turn LEFT on Territorial Highway toward Lorane (AKA Country Road 116, AKA The Applegate Trail). Go 9.1 miles.

At the Lorane General Store turn LEFT on Siuslaw River Road (AKA Lorane West Road). Go 17.6 miles to a Y-intersection. During this segment, you'll pass Siuslaw Falls Road, one of the only paved side roads. Note that the total distance you will travel on Siuslaw River Road is 22.2 miles, but directions have been broken into three segments due to two unusual Y intersections.

At the intersection with Wolf Creek Road, you should stop and will see several signs directly in front of you and to your left with a lot of confusing information and arrows on them. Bear LEFT to remain on Siuslaw River Road, then continue 1.8 miles to the next intersection. Two landmarks in this 1.8 mile stretch are the Sheriff Department's Work Camp on your left (marked as Alma on some road maps) and a quarter mile after the Work Camp you'll see a huge 10 foot by 10 foot wooden road map sign directly in front of you in the middle of the next Y intersection in the road. This sign can be ignored, it is confusing since it is upside down for one thing, with north facing into the ground.

Bear RIGHT at the big sign to remain on Siuslaw River Road. Go 2.8 miles.

During this 2.7 mile stretch you will immediately cross a one-lane bridge / culvert. Continue on the paved road until you see the DRC entrance with a 20 foot high entrance gate on your right. You will note two smaller gates with prayer flags on the left side of the road. The sale will be happening in the small meadow along the road on the left side.

Calling the DRC

If you get lost and need directions, cell phones do not work at or in the area for several miles around the DRC. The closest potential cell reception is at the "mile 9 marker" (at the crest of Timber Ridge) along Wolf Creek Road. Sprint and some other cellular services work intermittently there. Cingular does not. That spot is roughly an 8 mile or 15 minute drive from the property. If you can't get reception there, you may need to drive to Territorial Highway in Lorraine or Crow.

There is one number that rings at the DRC which you can try: 619-817-8255 - Dzogchen Gonpa's Main number
